Transamerica Pyramid

THE BUILDING

The Transamerica Pyramid which was completed in 1972 remained the tallest building in San Francisco until 2018. The building has a distinctive pyramid shape with two “wings” that flank the building and house the elevator shaft and smoke tower. The shape of the Transamerica Pyramid was designed to minimize the blocking of natural light and airflow from the crowded streets below it. Given that the building is located in an earthquake-prone region, special care was taken to ensure that the building was engineered to withstand tremors.
